Tennessee set to resume executions in 2022

The court delayed the capital punishments of death row inmates Oscar Franklin Smith and Harold Wayne Nichols in 2020, citing COVID-19 concerns, reported The Tennessean. But with the latest order both are set to be executed in 2022, Smith was convicted in the 1989 murders of Judith Lynn Smith, 35; Chad Burnett, 16; and Jason Burnett, 13, in Nashville.

Nichols was convicted of rape and first-degree felony murder in the 1988 death of Karen Pulley in Hamilton County. He was sentenced to death in 1990.

Tennessee has executed 139 people since 1916. The last occurred in February 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic. The state resumed capital punishments in 2018 after a nine-year hiatus.

Smith's execution date is set for April 21, 2022, and Nichols' is set for June 9, 2022.
