Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) introduced an
article of impeachment in the U.S. House of Representatives, seeking to remove President Donald Trump
from office for obstruction of justice. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas)
co-sponsored the article.
According to the Huffington Post, Sherman first raised
the specter of impeachment in early June, basing his case on Trump’s
apparent interference in an FBI investigation into his former national security
advisor, Michael Flynn.
As Sherman sees it, Trump’s firing of FBI Director James
Comey ― who
says he was firedin retaliation for continuing to investigate Flynn ― constitutes
obstruction of justice.
“Recent disclosures by Donald Trump Jr. indicate that
Trump’s campaign was eager to receive assistance from Russia,” Sherman
explained in a media release. “It now seems likely that the President had
something to hide when he tried to curtail the investigation of National
Security Advisor Michael Flynn and the wider Russian probe. I believe his
conversations with, and subsequent firing of, FBI Director James Comey
constitute Obstruction of Justice.”
